LOS ANGELES (AP) 鈥 On New Year's Eve 2022, Colombian superstar Maluma bid farewell to his musical alter ego Papi Juancho, created during the coronavirus pandemic. 鈥淔ue un placer,鈥 he wrote on Instagram. 鈥淚t was a pleasure.鈥 Then he teased a new era: Don Juan, coming 2023.
The wait is over. On Friday, Maluma will release his highly anticipated album, 鈥淒on Juan.鈥
The choice of title is both a clever reference to the infamous 17th century literary Lothario and a reference to Maluma鈥檚 birth name, Juan Luis Londo帽o Arias.
It's a rich place to pull from, and that matches the listening experience: 鈥淒on Juan鈥 may very well be Maluma's most dynamic album to date, a collection of familiar sounds and new collaborations spanning different genres 鈥 a more expansive listen than 2020's 鈥淧api Juancho,鈥 and just as enjoyable.
鈥'Don Juan' is a part of me,鈥 Maluma, 29, said. 鈥淥f course, 鈥楧on Juan鈥 is a character that I've been building for the last two years ... for this whole new music era.鈥
Maluma was a composer on the album, which he describes as 鈥渧ery personal鈥 鈥 a reflection of his musical roots, the sounds from his earliest records 鈥 and 鈥渕ore mature.鈥
The singer has long-considered himself a genre-eclecticist, pulling from various styles of music across Latin America and beyond. On the pop-norte帽o track 鈥淪eg煤n Qui茅n,鈥 he teams up with m煤sica mexicana hero 鈥 directly reflective of the mainstream success regional Mexican music acts like , , and are currently experiencing.
Before the pandemic, Maluma says, he sensed that corridos and banda music were going to enter the global music market. So, he called up songwriter 脡dgar Barrera in 2018 and said: 鈥淚 need different instrumentals because I want to start writing Mexican songs, like, regional music. He said, 鈥榃hy? Let鈥檚 keep doing reggaeton,' and I was like, 鈥榊ou鈥檒l see!'鈥
Then the sound was everywhere.
鈥淚'm so glad that it happened because we really needed it in the industry,鈥 he smiles. 鈥淭hat Mexican sauce, we were missing it in the global view of Latin music.鈥
In many ways, 鈥淒on Juan鈥 mirrors Maluma's take on global Latin music 鈥 he tackles salsa on 鈥淟a F贸rmula,鈥 with in one moment, and reggaeton and house music on 鈥淒iablo, Qu茅 Chimba,鈥 a collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA.
The latter is particularly noteworthy because the pair appeared to have a short-lived rivalry a few years back when Anuel AA sang, 鈥淣unca flow Maluma, siempre Real G," on the 2019 Bryant Myers鈥 鈥淕an-Ga鈥 remix. Translated to English, it implies that Anuel AA has 鈥渞eal flow,鈥 and not 鈥淢aluma flow鈥 鈥 a dig at the singer's accessible, glossy style. even tweeted the lyric.
鈥淗e's a good human being," Maluma says of Anuel AA. 鈥淎nd I never expected that, to be honest. The first time I met him, I was like, 鈥極h my god, this douchebag.'鈥
But once they started talking about music and realized they had more in common, he realized Anuel 鈥渉as a big heart, come on!鈥
鈥淭hat's how the collaboration started,鈥 he added. 鈥淗e's an interesting character that we have in Latin music, and he really can't stop what he's doing because we need that kind of characters in our industry.鈥
And between Papi Juancho and his new Don Juan persona, Maluma knows something about characters.
