When firefighters arrived at a home in the city's northeast, they detected carbon monoxide levels at a life-threatening concentration.

They found the source of the gas was a vehicle that had been left running in the attached garage for hours.

The man and boy were taken to hospital, and crews ventilated the home until carbon monoxide levels returned to zero.

Firefighters also found that there were no working carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

"This incident is a critical reminder of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly," the fire department said Wednesday in a news release.

"The Calgary Fire Department urges all residents to install working CO alarms on every level of their home and never leave vehicles running in an attached garage, even with the door open."
