In the wake of devastating wildfires in Los Angeles that struck at the heart of the movie industry, an embattled Hollywood lined up behind the Netflix narco-musical about trans identity 鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥 in Oscar nominations Thursday.
Jacques Audiard鈥檚 鈥淓milia P茅rez,鈥 a Spanish-language, French-made film, dominated the nominations with a leading 13 nominations, including best picture and best actress for making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar. The film also landed nominations for directing, original screenplay, two for its songs and for Zoe Salda帽a' s supporting performance.
鈥淭his recognition is a celebration of the global world we live in,鈥 Audiard said in a statement.
Netflix, despite its starring role in Hollywood, has never won best picture. Many of its top contenders have previously racked up large numbers of nominations (including 鈥淢ank,鈥 鈥淭he Irishman鈥 and 鈥淩oma鈥) but gone home with only a handful of trophies.
鈥淓milia P茅rez,鈥 though, may be its best chance yet. It became the most nominated non-English language film ever, surpassing Netflix鈥檚 own 鈥淩oma,鈥 which landed 10 nominations. Only three films 鈥 鈥淎ll About Eve,鈥 鈥淭itanic鈥 and 鈥淟a La Land鈥 鈥 have scored more nominations in Academy Awards history.
Another musical 鈥 鈥淲icked,鈥 the smash Broadway adaptation 鈥 came away with nearly as many nominations. collected 10 nominations, including best picture and acting nods for its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
filmed in VistaVision and released by A24, also came away with a commanding 10 nominations, including best picture, best director and acting nominations for Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones.
The 10 nominees for best picture are: 鈥淎nora鈥; 鈥淭he Brutalist鈥; 鈥淎 Complete Unknown鈥; 鈥淐onclave鈥; 鈥淒une: Part Two鈥; 鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥; 鈥淚鈥檓 Still Here.鈥; 鈥淣ickel Boys鈥; 鈥淭he Substance鈥 and 鈥淲icked.鈥
Last year, 鈥極ppenheimer鈥 rolled. This year is different
In a wide-open Oscar race, the six most honored films 鈥 鈥淓milia P茅rez,鈥 鈥淲icked,鈥 鈥淭he Brutalist,鈥 鈥淎nora鈥 (six nominations) 鈥淐onclave鈥 (eight nominations) and 鈥淎 Complete Unknown鈥 (eight nominations) 鈥 all fared as expected. The biggest surprises were the Brazilian film 鈥淚鈥檓 Still Here,鈥 under that also landed Fernanda Torres a best actress nomination, and RaMell Ross鈥 鈥淣ickel Boys,鈥 a that reconsiders how Black life and pain is depicted on screen.
鈥淣ickel Boys鈥 director RaMell Ross watched the nominations with popcorn Thursday morning in Providence, Rhode Island.
鈥淭his film forces a subjective response. It forces someone to speak their mind,鈥 said Ross. 鈥淭his film is a film that needs discourse. It鈥檚 a film that鈥檚 built for discourse. The film is a discourse amongst itself. I can鈥檛 wait to do it more.鈥
Those nominees likely in the prison drama the journalism thriller and the tender comedy though those films all landed nominations elsewhere.
One of 2024鈥檚 most audacious films, landed a surprising pair of nominations, for Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong. The film dramatizes the formative years of (Stan) in New York real estate under the tutelage of attorney Roy Cohn (Strong). Trump has called those involved with the film 鈥渉uman scum.鈥
鈥淗e called us 鈥榟uman scum,鈥 and I actually feel afraid talking to you about that right now. And that is an alarming feeling to be having in this country in 2025,鈥 Strong said by phone Thursday from his home in Brooklyn.
鈥淥n a level of artistry, today, for me personally, is an incredible day and I feel very happy,鈥 Strong added of his first Oscar nomination. 鈥淎nd I have complicated feelings about the character I played. It was the role of a lifetime and at the same time his legacy is real and it鈥檚 playing out in situ in front of our eyes in very frightening ways.鈥
In the best actor category, where Stan and Brody were nominated, the other nominees were (鈥淎 Complete Unknown鈥), (鈥淪ing Sing鈥) and (鈥淐onclave鈥). Most notably left out was , acclaimed for his very un-James Bond performance in 鈥淨ueer.鈥
Best actress, a category that Demi Moore has appeared to have locked up for her full-bodied performance in 鈥淭he Substance,鈥 saw nominations for Moore, Gasc贸n, Torres, Erivo and the star of 鈥淎nora,鈥 Mikey Madison. Arguably the year鈥檚 most competitive category, that left out (鈥淗ard Truths鈥), , (鈥淭he Last Showgirl鈥), (鈥淏abygirl鈥) and (鈥淢补谤颈补鈥).
鈥淚鈥檓 a Los Angeles native and so there鈥檚 been so much devastation these past few weeks and my heart breaks for LA. but it鈥檚 really beautiful to see everyone coming together,鈥 Madison said Thursday. 鈥淗ollywood coming together and celebrating film right now is really beautiful.鈥
In the directing category, 鈥淭he Substance鈥 filmmaker Coralie Fargeat managed to crack into the otherwise all-male group of (鈥淎nora鈥), Corbet, Audiard and James Mangold (鈥淎 Complete Unknown"). Most had expected Edward Berger to be nominated for directing the papal thriller 鈥淐onclave.鈥
Supporting actor was led by Kieran Culkin, the favorite for the award, for his performance in 鈥淎 Real Pain.鈥 The other nominees were: Yura Borisov (鈥淎nora鈥), Guy Pearce (鈥淭he Brutalist鈥), Edward Norton (鈥淎 Complete Unknown鈥) and Strong. Supporting actress nominations went to Grande, Salda帽a, Jones, Monica Barbaro (鈥淎 Complete Unknown鈥) and Isabella Rossellini (鈥淐onclave鈥).
Oscars push ahead, despite fires
The nominations had originally been planned for Jan. 17. But after wildfires on Jan. 7 began burning through the Pacific Palisades, Altadena and other areas around Los Angeles, leaving behind historic levels of destruction, the academy extended its voting window and twice postponed the nominations announcement. Fresh fires outside Los Angeles , announced by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott.
With so many in the film industry reeling, some called on the academy to cancel the Oscars altogether. Academy leaders have argued the March 2 ceremony must go ahead, for their economic impact on Los Angeles and as a symbol of resilience. Organizers have vowed this year's awards will 鈥渃elebrate the work that unites us as a global film community and acknowledge those who fought so bravely against the wildfires.鈥
鈥淲e will reflect on the recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity, and optimism that defines Los Angeles and our industry,鈥 Bill Kramer, academy chief executive, and Janet Yang, president, said in an email to members Wednesday.
But much of the usual frothiness Hollywood's awards season has been . The film academy canceled its annual nominees luncheon. Other events have been postponed or downsized. On Wednesday, Kramer and Yang said original song nominees won't be performed this year. , whose Pacific Palisades home was spared by the fires, .
Blockbusters (mostly) sit it out
The Oscar nominations followed an that saw expansive post-strike delays, wide swaths of unemployed workers due to an industry-wide production slowdown and the tragedy of the fires. Most humbling, perhaps, was the presidential election that returned Trump to office in a race where than all A-listers combined.
At the same time, even amid a downturn for the superhero film, the industry rallied behind some galvanizing hits, including Universal Pictures鈥 鈥淲icked,鈥 and three Walt Disney Co. $1 billion grossers in 鈥淚nside Out 2,鈥 鈥淒eadpool and Wolverine鈥 and 鈥淢oana 2.鈥
Those films missed nominations except for 鈥淚nside Out 2,鈥 which joined the best animated nominees of 鈥淭he Wild Robot,鈥 鈥淔low,鈥 鈥淢emoir of a Snail鈥 and 鈥淲allace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.鈥 Otherwise, the biggest hits to join the Oscar mix were 鈥淲icked鈥 ($710.3 million worldwide) and 鈥淒une: Part Two鈥 ($714.6 million). Netflix doesn鈥檛 report box office, so 鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥 has no tallied ticket sales, and hasn鈥檛 been among the streamer鈥檚 top watches, either.
That uncertain state of the movies seemed to be reflected in the nominations, which were theatrically released and predominantly streaming. Several movies that studios and streamers had declined to release 鈥 including 鈥淭he Apprentice鈥 and the Israeli-Palestinian documentary which still lacks a distributor 鈥 were vindicated with nominations.
But unlike last year, when Hollywood rallied around the success of 鈥淥ppenheimer,鈥 this year offered up no clear frontrunner for the industry鈥檚 top honor. With five weeks to go until the Oscar ceremony, at least four or five movies 鈥 including 鈥淭he Brutalist,鈥 鈥淓milia P茅rez,鈥 鈥淎nora,鈥 鈥淐onclave鈥 and 鈥淲icked鈥 鈥 are seen having a shot at best picture.
